What Minnesota asks of your siding

Siding here has to survive -20°F winters, summer hail, strong UV, and 40-degree temperature swings in a day. That rules nothing out entirely — but it changes how the common materials rank compared to milder climates.

Vinyl

The value pick. Modern vinyl is far better than the 1990s product on many metro homes: thicker panels resist cracking in cold and fading in sun. It remains the most affordable option and is essentially maintenance-free. Weaknesses: it can crack under severe hail impact in deep cold, and lower-grade panels can look wavy on long walls. If budget leads, choose a heavier-gauge panel.

Fiber cement

The all-rounder. Cement-board siding (painted or pre-finished) takes hail and cold well, holds crisp lines, and carries long finish warranties. It costs more than vinyl, installed weight and cutting mean labor matters, and repainting eventually comes due — but on the metro's mid-and-upper price homes it's often the sweet spot of durability and appearance.

Engineered wood

The looks pick. Treated engineered wood products give a warm, real-wood appearance with much better moisture behavior than raw cedar. Keep an eye on manufacturer maintenance requirements — warranties depend on them.

Steel

The hail pick. Steel siding shrugs off hail that damages everything else, doesn't burn, and lasts. Dents from severe impacts stay visible, and color/profile selection is narrower — but in the metro's hail corridors it has a loyal following for good reason.

Replacing older cedar

Many west-metro and lake-area homes still wear original cedar. Transitioning to fiber cement or engineered wood keeps the character while ending the paint-rot-repaint cycle; good trim detailing is what makes the conversion look right.
