When Should You Replace Siding?

1. Warped, buckled or wavy panels

Once panels deform, they shed water poorly and can't be flattened back. Localized warping can be repaired; widespread waviness means the material has fatigued.

2. Cracks, chips and hail fractures

Cold-weather hail is hard on vinyl in particular. Cracked panels let water behind the siding — which is where the real damage happens.

3. Moisture stains inside

Peeling interior paint or stains on walls, especially after wind-driven rain, point to failed siding or flashing letting water into the wall assembly.

4. Rot, mold or mildew at seams

Fungus growing at joints and bottom edges means moisture is living behind the panels.

5. Paint that won't hold

On wood and older composites, needing repainting every few years signals the substrate is failing, not the paint.

6. Rising heating bills

Siding is part of your home's weather barrier. Failing siding plus aging housewrap shows up in January bills.

7. Severe fading

Deep UV fade signals the material's protective layers are spent — cosmetic on its own, but usually accompanied by brittleness.

8. It's original to a 1990s-or-earlier home
